I know that we like nothing more that a visit from the VAT man or his colleagues in Customs & Excise, in fact we warmly embrace anyone representing the Crown, with a badge that officially allows snooping.
How many people can say the above and mean it?
Ok so we don't hug them on arrival, but because we archive and file records as they should be, if they do come for an audit we can present what they want when they want it.
If they ask for document (a) and your can't produce it, they are pre-disposed to ask for document (b), then (c) and so on until you are surrounded by paper and none of it is what the inspector wants.
Now your problems have really begun.
Fortunately for you there is a solution, and it is this. Maintain your paper records accurately, archive regularly, be aware of what you have to keep and keep your critical data off site. If you use these methods then your records will be in order and accessible when you need them.
The old mantra of the 6 P's applies here. Prior preparation prevents etc etc.
For a guide to retention schedules or advice on archiving, contact us and we will take the stress away.
