I don't want to index any more, I'm calling the AA.

Have you got lots of spare hours in the day?
Do you like data entry?
Is lugging boxes part of your fitness regime?

These are the questions I put to a chap in a legal firm the other day when we were discussing who would do the indexing of his backup tape library.

His answers were as follows...
Ha!
Do I like what?
Honestly, do I look like I have a regime?

This being the case I suggested that the best course of action was for me to take all his tapes away, bar-code them for traceability, create a full manifest and email him a copy. He was torn between letting his babies out of his sight (a common problem when you try to take data away from an IT chappie) and being able to get on with his job, safe in the knowledge that all would be done for him.
It didn't take long for him to jab his thumb in the general direction of the tape.... mountain, I couldn't really call it an archive; with the following comment of "help yourself". I feel I may have been played slightly here. No matter, the tapes were duly removed from site and taken back to Safebox HQ where they were diligently manifested.

Upon returning the manifest to the now client, they were surprised that we found 14 tapes they had no idea existed!

That's why we offer the service and that is why you can have a go yourself but it's much easier to let us take the pain away.

Would you try and change a tyre in the rain at the side of the M4? Nope, you'd call the AA man and watch it all happen as if by magic!
