I was at a networking meeting this morning, with my little presentation committed to memory when one of the speakers prior to me mentioned the importance of backing up your critical data.
Well on hearing this pitch I quickly changed my subject and went "off the cuff". Now this is something a seasoned networker should be able to do without putting your size 9's right in it.
The gentleman before me was offering a virtual backup service but nothing on the physical side, so my pitch began by painting a picture.
The picture in question was data tapes sitting on top of a server and the server catching fire or having something spilt on it and the resultant condition of the data tapes and the ability to extract information from them. Suffice to say the recoverable data was nil.
So I posed the following question: How badly would your business be affected if you lost all your critical data?
I let that sit for a couple of seconds whilst the assembled group formed their own picture of a total data loss. The picture was not a happy one.
So the golden rule is backup, don't put it on a to do list, don't have a go at it tomorrow. Do it now while you have the data.
Trying to back up nothing will provide you nothing.
Once you have done this, archive your tapes / hard drives by outsourcing.
