These days, paternity leave does not cut you off from the office for 2 weeks as I am about to find out. We are never more than 2 clicks and a 3 pin plug away from our entire business or that familiar "beep" from your Blackberry.
Any day now I will be immersing myself in nappies, SMA formula, and going coochie coochie coo, as number 3 decides to announce it's presence to the world. I have visions of doing the school run, chatting in the playground and emailing a client who thinks I am safe and snug behind my desk.
Our CRM system is now an internet powered, which means that I can get to it anytime of the day and night, quite literally. It also backs up into the cloud so no need for back ups. Great I can ditch that tape drive, what a relief. Erm no you can't. What about all the accounts data and other essential company data?
Before we plumped for this particular CRM system, we explored how they did their backups, what backup schedule they used, where their backups were done, how quickly we could get our data if they had an issue and most importantly, ensuring that our data was secure.
Once they had more than satisfied our criteria, we went live and we are very happy.
Our day to day and historical data, stays very much with us. Yes we mirror our data off site but we still use back up tapes and have a business continuity plan to re-capture data with the smallest downtime possible.
So if you had a data glitch and needed to go back a day, or week, or month. How would you do? Is your historic data secure, are your backups working and when did you last try a restore from your archive.
I know that should I wish to have a dose of normality during my 2 weeks child juggling, any work I do on my CRM will be safe and secure.
Business continuity is an essential part of your existence and data should be protected off site. Don't risk your business, back up your data and remove it off site.
